my changing studio life ...

My art has seen three distinct paths: Clay, Copper, and now Cotton.  All natural elements, each taking its own knowledge, muscles, and mindset.

In January of 2025, I indulged in fulfilling a childhood wish, and I bought myself a loom.  Actually, I bought 2 looms at an auction in Harper, Kansas.  And they weren't just any looms, they are 1966-1968 Macomber Floor looms.  I have fully restored the larger loom, completely disassembling it, cleaning, repairing, and giving the amazing hard maple a darker finish and a coating of protective hand rubbed polyurethane.  These looms belonged to a truly unique woman named Rosalea Hostetler, the owner of the infamous Rosalea's Hotel in Harper, and rumored to be a retired groupie for the Grateful Dead.  Who could pass up looms that had held court with a woman so unique and ahead of her time?

I have sold my Lockerbie kickwheel and moved my metalworking tools to the farm's shop, clearing the studio for my 56" Macomber loom, which now holds the prime space in the center of the south-facing windows of the studio; the smaller 32" loom has allowed my 8-year-old grandson a chance to try his hand at creating his own fiber art beside me.

I am fully enamoured of weaving.  The absolute requirement for focus, calm, and relaxed body movements makes weaving a wonderful respite from the hectic farm/ranch life and the chaos of today's outside world.

As a newbie to weaving, I have started by creating standard cotton hand towels to learn the mechanics of the loom and discover my own rhythm for creating.  At this time, I am not ready to sell any of my loom work, but as I improve, there may come a day when I may.

I still have a few lamps and copper shades, and a few select copper lighting fixtures that I will part with.  Please contact me if there is a piece that you are looking for.

I am enjoying my newfound talents and the concentrated calm that the sounds and motion of the loom bring to me - I hope that all who read this are as lucky to find the pleasure and solace in their own lives that I have found at the loom.
